Jeera rice

After spending the entire saturday morning cleaning my kitchen, putting clothes to wash, washing my hair and all the things we IT geeks do on our much awaited weekend, I was dead tired to cook an elaborate lunch. Its been some time that I have gotten bored of eating out too. So at 1.30pm, I was dying of hunger and had no time to cook an elaborate meal but being a foodie, I seldom adjust to simpler foods in life like instant noodles or curd rice. So something easy to make and appealing to the taste buds was in demand. Hence, jeera rice and dal. Jeera rice in restaurants is generally made with only jeera seeds. My sister gave me a useful tip of adding jeera powder. I must say it improves the taste hugely. It is her recipe that follows...


Ingredients:

Rice – 1 cup
Water – 2 cups (or as much needed to cook the rice)
Cumin seeds/ Jeera – 2 tsp
Cumin powder / Jeera powder – 2-3 tsp
Green chillies - 2
Oil – 2 tsp
Salt

Method:

Wash the rice with water and drain and keep aside
Heat oil in a cooker
When hot, add the cumin seeds.
When the cumin seeds brown, add chopped green chillies and fry for 30 seconds
Add 2 cups of water to the cooker.
Add cumin powder and salt
Add washed rice and cook until rice is done (My cooker takes around 4 whistles)
Enjoy with dal
